Hemmingway-1: A More Personal AI Game Master, Coming Soon
Hemmingway-1 is coming soon to Playworlds. Discover how its focus on conversation and creative writing could bring more character to NPCs and fantasy adventures.

Coming soon to Playworlds: Hemmingway-1. Planned model support; launch timing and in-game pricing have not been announced.
The scene is simple: you return a keepsake to an innkeeper who thought it was lost. A memorable game master knows when a pause, a changed expression or a short reply says more than another paragraph of exposition. Hemmingway-1 is an upcoming model we want to explore for that kind of play.

What is Hemmingway-1?
Hemmingway describes its 27-billion-parameter model as focused on conversation and writing. Its model card lists the API name hemmingway-27b, function calling and an OpenAI-compatible interface. That makes it a candidate for expressive narration, but compatibility alone does not establish reliable game-master behavior.

A stronger sense of character in each conversation
Our proposed use is dialogue that responds to the relationship in the scene. A wary ferryman, an excited apprentice and a tired companion should notice different details and speak for different reasons. Emotion should follow events the player actually experienced.
Here is an original illustrative scene, not a recorded model response. You place the recovered keepsake on the counter:
The innkeeper turns the little compass over twice. “The needle always stuck.” She tries to smile. “He said that meant it wanted to stay home.” She sets a second cup beside yours.
A reply like this creates an opening without dictating your reaction. You could ask who owned the compass, sit quietly, or show the mark you found on its case. For an AI RPG, strong prose is useful when it supports a playable choice.
What the published benchmarks do—and do not—tell us
The model card reports an EQ-Bench 4 score of 1330 and a StoryBench score of 1197. Hemmingway identifies EQ-Bench 4 as public, while its CommunicationBench, Human-Likeness and StoryBench evaluations are internal. These are vendor-reported results, not a Playworlds roleplaying comparison.
Our GM evaluation needs different evidence: whether an NPC remembers a promise, keeps a secret they would know, respects a failed action and leaves the player free to choose. A pleasant writing sample is a starting point; a coherent adventure requires those checks across many turns.
Affordable narration, with room to test pacing
The listed API rates are $0.24 for input, $0.024 for cached input and $0.90 for output per million tokens, checked September 24, 2026. An illustrative call with 8,000 uncached input and 600 billed output tokens costs $0.00246 before other services or extra calls.
The API documentation supports streaming and adjustable thinking, with thinking enabled at its highest level by default and billed as output. We would test pacing settings against actual scenes; low token rates and a smaller model do not guarantee a short wait.

Coming soon: our planned GM experience
We want to bring Hemmingway-1 to Playworlds for expressive conversations and narration grounded in your adventure. The game still needs to supply relevant history, resolve mechanics and save accepted outcomes. A narrator should describe the consequences of a roll without quietly rewriting them.
Playworlds credits and release timing will be announced separately. This article presents the planned direction, not a claim that Hemmingway is already selectable or that our gameplay tests are complete.

Frequently asked questions
Is Hemmingway-1 available in the game today?
Not yet. It is listed as coming soon to Playworlds, with no announced launch date.
Does it replace the game’s rules or memory?
No. Character voice is the narrator’s job. The game must still track inventory, clues, rolls and prior choices, then give the narrator the facts needed for the next scene.
Is it a voice or image generator?
This planned use concerns written narration and dialogue. Spoken narration and generated illustrations are separate parts of the game; this announcement does not promise new audio or image features.
